This is a Striped Bass derby.

If you are fishing this tournament please understand that these will be fish that may be staging in the lower harbor before spawning. We want them all released! Please use circle hooks and take precautionary even perhaps extraordinary measures to bring fish in alive. We will do everything we can to help you release your catch alive. Let's all do our part to preserve this great resource.
If you want to investigate a live well capable of keeping your fish alive go to this discussion on Striper Tubes.

PRESS RELEASE

(For immediate release)  The Hudson River Fisherman's Association (HRFA) and National Striped Bass Association (NSBA) are happy to report a special opportunity for striped bass fishermen interested in learning how to keep and handle striped bass alive and in a manner that will allow the opportunity to release them after handling them during a tournament weigh-in so the fish can be returned to the waterways and add to the future stocks for our natural Striped Bass fishery.  During the Captain's meetings for the Liberty Striped Bass Derby, the NSBA will provide to HRFA and NSBA members instruction on proper handling and operation of the Striper Tube (TM) and how to use them to bring striped bass to the Derby weigh-in alive.  Any member (in good standing) of either of these organizations can participate in this free demonstration and trial use of the striper tube.  The NSBA will have approximately 50 or so of the Striper Tubes available for free use and demo.  The Striper Tubes will be loaned out on a first-come-first-served basis, but NSBA Competition members and subscribers to Striped Bass Magazine will be given first consideration of those present.  And the NSBA will reward those trying it out by offering a special contest and drawing for a Lowrance Color Sonar and GPS+WAAS Mapping Combo System (LMS-332c).   This brilliant New 480Vx480H Pixel, 265-color Fullsize Sonar/GPS+WAAS Mapping Combo from Lowrance includes all of the normal Lowrance features including a built in temperature sensor in the transducer capable of accurately reading surface temperatures at speeds up to 70 MPH, the Innovative FlashGraf LCD flasher with COLORLINE, and Lowrance's built-in background mapping with the exclusive plug-&-play high detailed Fishing Hot Spots Elite, and compatible with the optional FreedomMaps (TM), NauticPath (TM) coastal, and Navionics (TM) electronic chart options, many with depth contour lines, and optional Map Create 6.3 Software where users can build their own specialized maps with contour lines.

This special drawing and contest will be free to those participating and will work as follows:

1). Any person attending the Captain's Meeting free demonstration and signing up and trying out a Striper Tube and either returning it or purchasing it will receive a ticket for the drawing.

2). Any person delivering a striped bass alive and releasable in the striper tube to the Liberty Derby weigh-in scale at the Liberty Park weigh-in site during the official weigh-in period will receive 1-ticket for each pound their striped bass weighs.

4). Any person purchasing a striper tube during the weekend event up to the awards ceremony will be given an additional ticket for the drawing.

5). At the awards ceremony on May 6th, a winner will be drawn from the eligible tickets and the prize will be awarded.
